LACON, Ill. (AP) – A judge in Marshall County has sentenced convicted murderer Tony Smith of Lacon to natural life in prison without any chance of parole, and says it isn’t enough.
In handing down the sentence Thursday against the 40-year-old, Circuit Court Judge Stephen Kouri said the law does not provide adequate punishment for someone who could shoot his estranged girlfriend five times.
Smith was convicted recently of first-degree murder for the killing of 49-year-old Judith Berchtold, who was slain at an intersection in Sparland last April.
