Health Of Area Counties Is Ridiculed

Posted by wlpo on February 19, 2010

How healthy do you consider yourself?  The overall health of area counties are being compared with the rest of the state.

The University of Wisconsin along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released county health rankings this week for all 50 states.

When it comes to overall health rankings, La Salle is 80th out of 102 counties.  Putnam County’s ranked 57th and Bureau 34th.  Overall health was based on things like the rate of people dying before the age of 75, percentage of people who report being in fair or poor health, numbers of days people report being in poor physical and poor mental condition, and the rate of low-birth weight infants.

Each county fared poorly in clinical care rankings with Putnam 93rd in the state, Bureau 87th and La Salle County 82nd.

Ottawa Man Gets Prison For Sex Crime

Posted by wlpo on February 19, 2010

A man who skipped town after being arrested for a sex assault charge is headed to prison.

Brian Meredith of Ottawa was sentenced to 13 years in prison yesterday.  He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence.

Meredith was arrested in August of 2008 on a warrant for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.  He was accused of repeatedly abusing an underage girl who was his neighbor.  He eventually bonded out but skipped a court date.  A new warrant was issued for his arrest.

Meredith was tracked down last July after someone called Ottawa Police saying they knew a woman he was staying with.

He’s getting credit for 398 days spent in jail which will lessen is his time in prison.

United Way at 90% of annual goal

Posted by wlpo on February 19, 2010

How do you raise $34,000 in 28 days?  It doesn’t sound easy, but the United Way of the Illinois Valley is hoping it’s not impossible.

The charity is that much short of reaching their annual appeal’s goal of $340,000.

Andrea Walters is the executive director.  She says if they don’t meet the goal, they’ll need to reduce the allocations that go to their agencies.

This year’s goal is $100,000 less than last years mainly because they knew one of the most popular ways of raising money has been eroding.  The agency relies heavily on local employers asking their workers to donate through payroll, but with some companies out of business or with fewer workers, they’re donating less.

You can donate by visiting their website.
