Nursing Home Chief Is Picked

Posted by wlpo on February 11, 2010

It looks like the La Salle County Board has finally found a nursing home administrator.

Dr. Amjad Hussain was unanimously approved for the position Thursday and thanked the board for their confidence and promised to do best job he could.

Hussain referenced the issue of sex abuse complaints at the nursing home saying “sometimes things happen”.  He pledged that his first priority is keeping the people living at the home safe and giving them the best care they can.

Hussain will be paid 79 thousand dollars.  His contract starts Tuesday and runs for a year.

The board thought they had an administrator a few weeks ago but she backed out just before she was supposed to start.

Red Cross offers disaster response training

Posted by wlpo on February 11, 2010

Responding to a disaster takes more than police and fire departments; it also requires a lot of volunteers.

The Red Cross office in Peru is holding Client Casework training Saturday.  You would learn how to interview people so they could receive assistance after a disaster.

Before taking the class Saturday, you would need to read an introduction to disaster services.  It’s available at online at www.redcross.org

Saturday’s training is from 8:30am-4:30pm .  It would be followed up with another training session Thursday.

For more information or to sign-up, call the office in Peru.

Coroner Job In Bureau County Debated

Posted by wlpo on February 11, 2010

Depending on which county you live in, your coroner is elected or appointed.  In Bureau County the board chooses someone to serve as coroner, though at least one person would be interested in having the position determined by election.

Randy Grant of Grant-Johnson Funeral Homes told the board Tuesday night he would be interested in being the coroner.  He wasn’t chosen.  Instead the board re-appointed Janice Wamhoff.
Grant told the board he would consider running for the office if the law changes.  Board Chairman Dale Anderson said about nine out of 10 counties in the state elect people to the office.

Having the position changed into an elected office would require a ballot question, either proposed by the county board or through someone in the public.
