Ottawa marks Boy Scouts’ 100th anniversary

Posted by wlpo on February 8, 2010

One hundred years ago Monday, William Dickson Boyce of Ottawa is credited with creating the Boy Scouts of America. To mark the occasion, both the city of Ottawa and La Salle County Board proclaimed this year as the “Year of Scouting”. The Ottawa Scouting Museum is planning various events throughout the year including a “Scout Homecoming” from June 10th-13th throughout Ottawa. Things planned for the homecoming are appearances by Boyce’s descendants, a soap box derby, 1910 campsite and parade ending at Boyce’s gravesite in Ottawa Avenue Cemetery. Mollie Perrot is the organizer of the homecoming event and executive director of the Ottawa Scouting Museum. She says Boyce came up with the idea of the Boy Scouts when a scout in London gave him directions and then declined a tip for helping. The scout told Boyce it was his good deed for the day as a scout.
