Hicks wants legal opinion on forest preserve district

Posted by wlpo on February 6, 2010

With every township now disconnected, what’s next for the La Salle County Forest Preserve Board and District?

Jerry Hicks is the county board chairman.  He says he plans to talk with State’s Attorney Brian Towne to draw up a letter requesting clarification about the state statute regarding forest preserves.

Hicks says the forest preserve board is still in place but they can’t levy any taxes to create and maintain a forest preserve with no townships in the preserve.  He says there’s a chance the board could be donated property to be part of a reserve.

Hicks says the law is so “ambigious” that it’s hard to say what the status is other than to say the issue is stagnant.
