Kirk popular topic for Senate candidates

Posted by wlpo on January 27, 2010

Congressman Mark Kirk wasn’t one of the four candidates for U.S. Senate at Illinois Valley Community College Tuesday night but his name came up frequently.

Republicans Patrick Hughes, Don Lowery, Andy Martin and Kathleen Thomas all too shots at Kirk who appears to be the front-running Republican to vie for President Barack Obama’s old senate seat.

Hughes claimed to be the only true “Reagan Conservative” among his challengers last night.  Lowery asked voters to look at his long record of holding up the ideals of the constitution being a longtime judge.  Martin says he’s a builder and performer claiming he challenged former Governor Jim Thompson and won when it came to building Interstate 39.  Thomas meanwhile, the only woman in the race, promised to uphold the courage and convictions of conservative principles and said any legislation that raises taxes isn’t good legislation.

While Lowery is a retired judge, Hughes and Martin are both lawyers while Thomas is a teacher and historical researcher.
