Ice Jam Finally Breaks

Posted by wlpo on January 25, 2010

The snow melt is turning out to be good news for some and bad news for others.

The National Weather Service says snow and ice runoff over the weekend has allowed the ice jam in Dayton to break up and allow the Fox River to flow again.  There’s still a flood warning in effect for Dayton since the water is still above the 12 foot flood stage.

A flood warning has also been issued for the Illinois River at La Salle because of the snow melt.  The river stage is over 21 feet, a foot above flood stage.  The river’s expected to continue to rise near 23 feet by tomorrow afternoon.  At that level, it could begin flooding the boat ramp at Starved Rock.
