Another Part Of L-P Crumbles

Posted by wlpo on January 21, 2010

The entrance labeled “gymnasium” at LP High School has greeted sports fans since 1963 and time is catching up with the limestone facade.

A two foot long, four inch by four inch piece of stone crumbled from the entrance canopy after a wrestling meet last Monday.  The school’s architect was called and soon a strip of stone was removed making the area safe.  It still needs to be restored though.

Bob Johnson is the school’s architect.  He says the stone engraved with the word gymnasium will have to be removed and replaced, most cost effectively with surface-mounted letters.  The message “La Salle Peru Township High School” would likely be posted since nowhere on the school does it include its name.

Work was done last summer to restore the clock-tower after chunks of stone fell and an inspection revealed it needed work to be made safe again.
