Mine Disaster Balloon Found 800 Miles Away

Posted by wlpo on December 21, 2009

When 259 balloons were released in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Cherry Mine Disaster, at least one balloon made a landing a long ways away.

When hunting with his daughter on November 15th, Zachary Rogers of Sackets Harbor, New York found a helium balloon in the woods.  Tied to the balloon string was a tag dedicating it to 24 year old Steve Timko.  He was one of many miners who died at the Cherry Mine 100 years ago.

Rogers says he and his daughter went to the internet and read up on the Cherry Mine Disaster.  Rogers found the balloon less than 24 hours after it was released.

The balloon traveled 818 miles.
