OES Board Picks Spot For New School

Posted by wlpo on December 15, 2009

If and when a new Central Elementary School is built in Ottawa, it’s going to be near Shepherd Middle School.

The elementary school board voted 4-2 Tuesday night to purchase 46.8 acres of farmland near the middle school.  The two dissenting board members think the amount of land is excessive.

The board is pursuing a 500 student school to house 5th and 6th graders who are currently going to class in the old Wal-Mart building.

Ottawa Says Yes To IVCC Campus

Posted by wlpo on December 15, 2009

Going to classes at Illinois Valley Community College for people in places like Ottawa and Streator just got more convenient.

After lengthy negotiations, the Ottawa City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a five-year lease for IVCC to open a satellite building in downtown Ottawa.  Assuming the IVCC Board approves the deal Thursday night, Mayor Bob Eschbach would purchase the classroom space from Centrue Bank for 625 thousand dollars.  Eschbach says renovations will be done by mid-July, so classes can start in August.

IVCC will pay the city 650 thousand dollars rent over the length of the lease.  The first six months of the lease, the city will let IVCC use rent money to advertise the new building.

Eric Rasmussen of Morris told police that he was on Route 47 in Morris Sunday when he was distracted by a person in a pancake costume standing on the corner of an intersection.  The distraction allegedly caused a husband and wife to have to swerve and miss Rasmussen.  While the couple missed Rasmussen, they hit a utility pole.
