Bar Owner Admits To Running Gambling Ring

55 year old Richard Smith pled guilty yesterday to one count of gambling and one count of keeping a gambling place.

Smith runs Smitty’s Tap in Streator which was raided February 2nd by undercover state agents.  Investigators say they confiscated over 120 thousand dollars from sports bets at Smitty’s just a day after the Super Bowl.

As part of deal to plead guilty, Smith was given two years probation, five thousand dollars in fines and surrender gambling proceeds that were allegedly found during the February raid.

The same day Smith was arrested, Julie Simmons was also charged with gambling and keeping a gambling place.  She run’s Julie’s Victory in Streator.  Investigators say they got illegal payouts for credits won on video slot and poker machines and also were able to bet on sports at the memorabilia store.

Simmons next court date is Thursday.
