Peru City Council goes into a rare closed session

Posted by wlpo on November 19, 2009

The Peru City Council doesn’t often go into closed session, maybe that’s why when an alderman Wednesday night motioned to go into closed session, there was some confusion.

Towards the end of last night’s informal council meeting, Alderman Bob Ankiewicz motioned to go into closed session to discuss personnel matters.  The move caused the council and city attorney Doug Schwiekert to pause.

A closed session was not on the agenda and no action is supposed to be taken during an informal meeting.

After looking up the guidelines for a closed session, the council voted to go into closed session and moved to a conference room, away from the council chambers.

It’s unclear if what they discussed last night will be on Monday night’s formal council meeting agenda.

The rain has softened the site of a new waste water treatment plant in La Salle.  A groundbreaking for the additional plant is at 1pm.

The plant will be on the east side of the Little Vermilion River and serve areas to the east of the river.

To build the plant, La Salle is receiving $15 million in federal stimulus money.  One fourth of the $15 million will not need to be paid back.  The rest will be paid back, interest free over the next 20 years.

The largest phase of the plant is being done by Rockford contractor, Sjostrom and Sons for $11.7 million.
