Halvorson not ready to back Thomson plan

Posted by wlpo on November 18, 2009

Some state officials think the mostly empty prison in Thomson should be sold to the federal government as a place to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.  But the idea has many opponents, mainly republicans.  An elected democratic is hesitant to throw her support behind the proposal though.

Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson said Tuesday she’s not yet convinced such a transfer would be in the best interests of national security.  She said she would need to see a plan that guarantees people’s safety.

She acknowledged the Thomson idea has local support because of the jobs it could create, but said nothing is more important than our national security.
