County Hopes To Cut Down On Strays

Posted by wlpo on November 10, 2009

Get ready to start paying more money if you have a non-neutered dog.

The Animal Parks Committee of the La Salle County Board yesterday voted to establish a split-fee system for dog registration.  The fee will be voted on by the entire county board later this month.

Under the proposal, license fees for dogs not spayed or neutered would be doubled to 20 for a year and 60 dollars for three years.  Fees for dogs that are spayed or neutered would be 10 dollars for one year and 30 dollars for three years.  The fees are in line with what neighboring counties charge.

Man Burned In Ottawa Fire

Posted by wlpo on November 10, 2009

55 year old Kevin Fribbs is in serious but stable condition at Loyola Medical Center burn unit after being rescued from his apartment around 1:30 Sunday morning.  He suffered burns on around 30 percent of his body during a fire.

The fire happened at a two-story home on the south side of Ottawa just south of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge on State Street.  The house on was divided into four different apartments.  Everyone else got out okay.

Ottawa Fire Chief Jim Duback says two seventeen year olds who were driving by noticed the fire and rushed in to try and help.  They were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.  Both were treated and released.

Duback says the fire looks to have started in Fribbs second-floor apartment.  The cause is still under investigation although Duback doesn’t think arson is a possible cause. .

Peru receiving funding for wind energy study

Posted by wlpo on November 10, 2009

Putting up a wind tower takes a lot of money, but in Peru they’re getting some help in the way of grants. Peru has hopes for a 2.5 megawatt turbine.
The latest grant is for just under $29,000.  The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation is offering the funding for a feasibility study.  Alderman Ron Wren explained it to the city council Monday night.  He says they need to the study before they can be eligible for more grants. Results of the study will have to be shared with Western Illinois University and the foundation.
It’s the second wind energy grant they’ve been told they’ll be receiving.  The federal Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act includes $1 million towards the turbine, but not for the feasibility study.
Wren says they have a location in mind, but can’t say where.  They’re hoping to have three-quarters of the cost covered through grants and other funding with the city only having to pickup the remain fourth of the cost.
