Meriden and South Ottawa Townships to vote on forest preserve

Posted by wlpo on November 9, 2009

Two more La Salle County townships will vote in February on whether or not to disconnect from the forest preserve district.

Meriden and South Ottawa Townships are the latest to gather up enough signatures to be able to vote on if they should opt out of the county forest preserve.  That leaves only Bruce Township to either not be voting to disconnect in February or have already voted to disconnect.

Just one year ago 59% of the countywide vote was in favor of creating a forest preserve.

Hundreds turn out for Utica Veteran’s Day Parade

Posted by wlpo on November 9, 2009

Organizers of the 3rd annual Utica Veteran’s Day Parade and memorial ceremony couldn’t have picked better weather for their event.

Hundreds lined downtown Utica Sunday to cheer dozen’s of military units and look up in the sky at military fly-overs.  After the parade, many headed over to Danny Carey Memorial Park for a ceremony that featured a handful of guest speakers including former Illinois Veteran’s Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.  Duckworth now works in the Obama administration and promised that every veteran would get the treatment they need.

Other speakers included the American Legion State Commander Bill Flanagan, VFW State Commander Jules Spindler and State Representative Frank Mautino.
