Bomb Squad removes grenades in Peru

Posted by wlpo on October 15, 2009

If you were following the story of the bomb squad set up in Peru, police say they were at a home after they found military hand grenades.

Police Chief Doug Bernabei says they called investigators from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office after the grenades were discovered at a home in the 1600 block of 5th Street.

The bomb squad arrived around noon Thursday.  While they were removing the grenades, a block of Putnam Street was blocked off.

Bernabei says the grenades were no longer live and were not a threat.  He says there will be no criminal charges related to the grenades, but wouldn’t go into detail as to why they were investigating the home.
