Board President Says Teachers Are Acting Petty

Posted by wlpo on October 9, 2009

Could Sunday’s negotiation session be the last chance before drastic action is taken by the Ottawa High School board?

Board President George Hupp says he’s giving teachers one more chance to make a serious offer.  If they don’t, Hupp says the meeting will end quickly and the board could start pursuing other options.  That would include going to arbitration or finding replacement teachers.  Hupp says both are drastic options but something they have to think about.

Until now, Hupp has insisted teachers send a proposal to him in advance.  He says due to the teacher’s “pettiness”, the board decided to drop this stance for this meeting only.

Former Board Chairman Creates Controversy

Posted by wlpo on October 9, 2009

Apparently old grudges die hard for some people.

Seven La Salle County Board members voted against a resolution yesterday naming a stretch of Champlain Street in Ottawa after former board chairman Glen “Joe” Dougherty.  County Engineer Larry Kinzer says it’s been tradition to name a stretch of county road after past board chairmen.

Voting against honoring Dougherty was: Catherine Owens, Arratta Znaniecki, Jack Leininger, Charles Borchsenius, Stephen Carlson, Randy Freeman and Don Jordan.  Everyone except Jordan is a republican.  Peru Democrat Matt McLaughlin voted present.

During discussion of the road naming, Freeman asked “if the road was a dead end road”.  Freeman often butted heads during Dougherty’s time as board chairman.
