Fire at Grain Elevator In Utica
Posted by wlpo on September 22, 2009
The fire at Consolidated Grain and Barge Company in Utica is under control. Now firefighters are trying to figure out why it started.
Fire crews from nearly a dozen different towns responded to a box alarm call at 4 this morning. Utica Fire Chief Dave Edgcomb says the fire was on what’s called a “grain leg”. The leg elevates grain up to a conveyor belt. Edgcomb says they used aerial trucks since the conveyor belt was around 150 feet in the air. Adding to the danger was nearby grain dust that’s very explosive.
No one was at the grain company when the fire started. A motorist passing by called in the fire. No one was injured.
