Fire displaces people living in Mendota apartments

A house fire in Mendota has displaced a family and another person. A person living in the upstairs apartment of the house on 3rd Street smelled smoke and reported the fire around 6pm Friday.

Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser says the fire started in the downstairs apartment’s kitchen, though the cause is uncertain. A person living in that unit wasn’t home at the time.

Troy Grove helped at the scene while Peru was on standby at the Mendota station. Rutishauser put that damage at $50,000.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Somonauk Man Faces Several Felony Charges

A domestic dispute in Lake Holiday apparently got way out of hand.

Edwin Barone was arrested yesterday morning at his place on Holiday Drive for several felony charges. He was picked up on multiple counts of aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Barone was taken to the county jail with bond set at 150 thousand dollars.

Princeton Man Allegedly Sold Cocaine By School

A man wanted in Bureau County for drugs was caught yesterday in Chicago.

Cook County officials arrested Charles Thomas on a Bureau County Warrant for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. The substance is allegedly cocaine.

TRIDENT officials notified the state that they were looking for Thomas after searching his home in Princeton recently. Thomas wasn’t home at the time.

Thomas will be brought back to Bureau County to face the cocaine charge. Investigators say the charge could be made worse for the fact that Thomas reportedly dealt cocaine within a thousand feet of a school.

Major Changes At County Nursing Home

Top administrators at the La Salle County Nursing Home have been relieved of their duties.

Adrienne Erickson has been fired as nursing home director while Director of Nursing Lauretta Hammerich and Social Service Director Lanette Olszanowski resigned.

Dennis Reinmann from Pathway Health Services has been named the interim nursing home director while interim replaces for Hammerich and Olszanowski will be picked Monday.

The nursing home staff came under fire after reports came out that as many as ten female patients were being sexually abused by one male patient at the nursing home. Nursing home staff were blamed for not taking action to stop the incidents.
