Bureau County Soldier Hurt In Middle East

A 23-year old soldier from Tiskilwa has been hurt in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Sgt. Drew McComber is in serious but stable condition after a soldier he was walking with stepped on a land mine. Three soldiers in McComber’s group were killed by the blast.

McComber was flown to a hospital in Germany. His injuries reportedly include broken bones and shrapnel wounds to his face and chest.

McComber is in his second tour of duty.

Fair Wraps Up

Looking for something to do with the day off? You could check out the final day of the Tri-County Fair.

Things going on today at the fairgrounds are a Baby Show at one and Demolition Derby at 4. Tickets for the Demo Derby are 8 dollars for general seating, 25 dollars for a pit pass.

The carnival, food, and petting zoo also continue today.

IVCC Getting State Literacy Grant

Programs like English as a Second Language at Illinois Valley Community College are getting a financial boost from the state.

The Secretary of State’s Office recently announced over five million dollars in Adult Literacy Grants for colleges and universities across the state. IVCC’s chunk of the grant money is 50,000 dollars for adult volunteer literacy.
