A change is coming to the Regional Office of Education. La Salle County Regional Superintendant Richard Myers says he’s retiring with the conclusion of his term in June 2011.
Myers was elected to the position in 2006 after being the assistant to the superintendant for 20 years. Prior to that, Myers was a teacher and school principal.

Time capsule marks anniversary of Lincoln-Douglas debate

151 years ago Friday was the famous Lincoln-Douglas debate in Ottawa.
To mark the occasion, city officials are dedicating a time capsule in Washington Park, site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate. The ceremony will start at 5pm.
This time last year a capsule was dug up in Washington Square that was buried in 1958.

Peru celebrates Powell’s birthday

The 142 birthday of Peru’s most musical daughter isn’t going unnoticed. The Maud Powell Birthday Celebration is a days worth of music, art and other activities through Peru.
It’s start Saturday at 9am with performances by local musicians at Maud Powell Plaza.
An art show and sale featuring work by local artists runs from 10 to 4pm at city hall.
The celebration wraps up at Centennial Park with a community picnic and concert from 5pm until 8pm. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Dessert and pop will be on sale.
The celebration is being put on by the City of Peru.
