Local Attorney Suspended

Posted by wlpo on August 15, 2009

An Ottawa attorney won’t practice law for at least a year.

A state judge has put Melvin Hoffman on suspension for three years. After the first year, he’ll be able to practice law but be put on probation for the next two years where he’ll have to undergo anger management and a psychiatric examination.

In the ruling, a judge said Hoffman has “serious anger issues” and his misconduct was serious. Hoffman’s accused of calling one judge “a narcissistic, maniacal, mental case who shouldn’t be on a bench”. In another incident, Hoffman allegedly compared a case he handled with the DCFS as “kangaroo court” and that the court hearing was “no more a fair hearing than they had in Russia when operating under the Soviet system”. The final accusation says Hoffman called another lawyer unethical and said the lawyer “must be from a Jewish firm”.
