Ammonia Leak In Mendota

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2009

Members of eight different fire departments in La Salle County responded to an ammonia leak at Grainco FS off Route 251 south of Mendota.

A couple motorists called 911 after smelling what they figured was ammonia just after 11 last night. A police officer noticed the smell at the intersection of Route 251 and North 40th Road so they figured it was coming from Grainco FS.

Firefighters located the leak coming from the top of a 30 thousand gallon anhydrous ammonia tank and called in mutual aid for fear of a large release of ammonia. The last firefighter left the scene at 3:30 this morning.

No one was hurt.

Surprise In Works In Spring Valley

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2009

Spring Valley’s mayor apparently is sitting on a big idea, but he’s not saying what it is, not yet anyway.

Cliff Banks told the city council last night he’s planned a meeting with area mayors to go over an idea that would use state money. Banks says he’s talked to U.S. Rep. Aaron Shock, state Representative Frank Mautino and representatives of the office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

Banks says he wants to get a large amount of money from a particular program but adds he hasn’t applied for anything yet.

The meeting is scheduled for August 17.
