New 911 system needed in Oglesby

Posted by wlpo on July 17, 2009

Thanks in part to Mother Nature, city officials in Oglesby are looking at buying a new 911 system.
The Oglesby Police Station was hit by lightning in early May, knocking out the 911 service for a few days. Oglesby’s calls were transferred to Peru during the time it was out of service.
Public Safety Commissioner Tom Porter says they’re in the early stages of checking into prices for a new system but he thinks he could be in the ballpark of $150,000 to $200,000. The money would come from the city’s 911 Board.
Even if the lightning strike wouldn’t have happened, Porter says the equipment was going on 20 years so it was about time to get something new.
