Two Children Hurt In Amtrak Collision Improving

Posted by wlpo on July 15, 2009

Good news today out of Rockford. The two survivors in Monday’s car and train crash near Somonauk are improving.

Ten year old Amelia Rasmusen and 7 year old Benjamin Rasmusen of Indiana are listed in good condition today at Rockford Memorial Hospital. There were in serious condition yesterday.

The two were hurt after the car they were riding in was hit by an Amtrak train just after three o’clock Monday afternoon. The collision killed 82 year old Ben and his wife 81 year old Marilyn Rasmusen of Leland and their 9 year old granddaughter Elizabeth.

Investigators say the crossing north of Route 34 has no gates or warning lights and they think the Rasmusen’s didn’t stop for the westbound train.
