New island in Illinois

Posted by wlpo on October 2, 2011

An island is under construction in the middle of the Illinois River in Peoria. The Journal Star reports more than 70,000 cubic yards of silt and river soil have been dredged for the
project. Now the soil forms the outline of a 21-acre boomerang-shaped island. The island will be on Peoria Lake near the McClugage Bridge which takes U.S. Routes 24 and 150 over the
waterway. The project is expected to be complete in 2012. Plans have been underway for 15 years to build three islands in the Peoria Lakes. The goal is to restore depth diversity for fish habitats. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers experts say sediment has gathered in the lakes, destroying habitats. Environmental groups oppose the project, saying it won’t solve the underlying problem.
